2009 Timed Writing: "The Street"
The following selection is the opening of Ann Petry's 1946 novel, The Street. Read the selection carefully and then write an essay analyzing how Petry establishes Lutie Johnson's relationship to the urban setting through the use of such literary devices as imagery, personification, selection of detail, and figurative language.
Reflection
This was one of the earlier timed writings that we did in class. Unfortunately I was unable to finish this essay in the allotted time. This was important because i was not able to conclude my essay which gave me a poor grade on the assignment. During my revision, I came to the conclusion that my essay was organized fairly well. I was on the right track but was unable to finish 1/3rd of my essay because of poor time management. My goal was to write about Imagery, selection of detail, and figurative language. I was only able to get through two of those three. If this were to happen to me on the AP test, I believe that i would make an executive decision to cut out the last one and quickly put a concluding paragraph so that my essay is complete and conveys a full idea. This was my biggest issue with this essay but can be an easy fix before the final exam if I focus on managing my time wisely.
